Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of the Pliny mobile application (the "App") operated by Almanac Studios Limited ("we", "our", or "us"), a private limited company registered in England and Wales (company number 17220472).

By creating an account or otherwise using Pliny, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the App.

1. Eligibility & accounts

You must be at least 13 years old to create a Pliny account. If you are between 13 and 18, you confirm that you have your parent or guardian's permission to use the App.

You are responsible for keeping your login details secure. You agree to provide accurate information when signing up and to keep your account information up to date.

2. The service we provide

Pliny is an educational app that provides history lessons, quizzes, and related features. We do our best to keep the App reliable, accurate, and up to date, but the App is provided on an "as is" basis. We may add, change, or remove features at any time.

3. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Use offensive, threatening, or impersonating usernames.
• Cheat on quizzes, leaderboards, or other competitive features.
• Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code from the App.
• Scrape, mass-download, or otherwise harvest data from the App or our servers.
• Interfere with the App's operation or with other users' use of it.
• Use the App for any unlawful purpose.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these rules.

4. Content and intellectual property

All content in the App — text, images, audio narration, illustrations, quizzes, branding, and design — is owned by Almanac Studios Limited or our licensors and is protected by copyright and other laws. You may use it only for your personal, non-commercial learning.

You own the content you create (your username, your in-app feedback submissions, etc.). By submitting content to us, you grant us a worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, display, and use it for the purposes of operating and improving the App.

5. In-app purchases & Pliny Premium

Pliny is free to download and includes free daily content. Optional premium features — including unlimited gems and an ad-free experience — are available through Pliny Premium, an auto-renewing subscription processed through the Apple App Store.

Subscription terms, including pricing and renewal periods, are shown to you in the App before you purchase. Subscriptions automatically renew at the end of each billing period unless you cancel through your App Store account at least 24 hours before renewal. Manage or cancel via iPhone Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions.

Refunds for App Store purchases are governed by Apple's refund policy and handled directly by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

6. Advertising

The free tier of the App is supported by advertising delivered by Google AdMob. By using the free tier you consent to the display of ads in the App. Personalised advertising depends on the choice you make in the iOS App Tracking Transparency prompt. See our Privacy Policy for details.

7. Educational disclaimer

Pliny's content is provided for general educational interest. While we work hard to ensure historical accuracy, we do not guarantee that every fact, date, or interpretation is free from error. Content is not intended as academic citation, legal advice, or definitive reference. If you spot an error, please email support@almanacstudios.co.uk.

8. Service availability

We aim to keep the App available and working but cannot guarantee uninterrupted service. We may need to take the App offline for maintenance, updates, or for reasons beyond our control.

9. Account suspension and termination

We may suspend or terminate your account if you break these terms or misuse the App. You may delete your account at any time by emailing support@almanacstudios.co.uk; see the Privacy Policy for the data-deletion process.

10. Disclaimer of warranties

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the App is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, accuracy, or non-infringement.

11. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Almanac Studios Limited will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages arising out of your use of the App. Our total liability for any direct damages arising under these terms is limited to the amount you have paid us for Pliny Premium in the twelve months preceding the claim (or £50, whichever is greater).

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits any liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law, including for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, give you reasonable notice in the App or by email. Your continued use of the App after a change means you accept the updated terms.

13. Governing law & jurisdiction

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any dispute arising under or in connection with these terms is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales, except that consumers may rely on mandatory protections under the law of the country in which they live.
